Some folks marched, others watched soccer, but a few Hongkongers celebrated July 1 by playing ice hockey. Specifically, four teams from the Hong Kong Amateur Hockey Club trekked to Macau over the weekend to join a team there for a day of mixed men and women's hockey games at the spanking new 7,000-seat Macau Dome. The stadium was built for the East Asian Games.

Among the players was Hopewell Holdings heir Thomas Jefferson Wu, who is also co-organiser of the event. The corporate sponsor was Melco International, the company headed by Lawrence Ho Yau-lung (Stanley's son) who has also been known to lace up a pair of skates and play in the league. Certainly, it was a full day with the players completing 10 games between 10am and 8pm. Perhaps they were celebrating Canada Day rather than the handover.
