Woman fined for illegal clubhouse

Updated at 5.47pm: A woman was fined $3,500 at the Eastern Magistrates' Court on Tuesday for managing a clubhouse without valid certificates.

The court heard that Home Affairs Department officers discovered the clubhouse during an inspection on Pak She Sixth Lane, Cheung Chau, in January.

Officers found two signboards at the entrance of a unit carrying the name of the clubhouse and a message stating non-members would not be served.

About 10 people were playing mahjong and cards in the unit, the court heard.

The woman later admitted she managed the club - which had about 100 members - without valid certificates.

She was subsequently charged with managing the clubhouse without a certificate of exemption or a certificate of compliance under Section 4(2) of the Clubs (Safety of Premises) Ordinance.

A department spokesman said enforcement officers would continue to launch operations against illegal clubhouses to ensure the safety of patrons.
