Designer food solutions

A competition is inviting students from around the world to design household appliances for use in

10 years' time which promote the theme 'Healthy Eating Habits in 2016'.

Entrants have to develop creative but practical solutions to food preservation and preparation for the future.

The fourth Design Lab Competition, now open for entries, is being organised by a well-known kitchen appliance producer, Electrolux.

Interested students can enter the competition by submitting their entries via the internet by August 18.

Entries will be judged based on the concept , design and creativity, together with their practicability, aesthetic appeal and use of artificial intelligence.

In addition, the entries should promote healthy eating habits.

The nine finalists will be invited to Barcelona, Spain, for a final event in November, where the global winner and their design will be announced. The champion will win Euro5,000 (HK$49,570) while the first and second runner-ups will be awarded Euro3,000 and Euro2,000 respectively.

Last year, more than 3,000 entries from 88 countries were received by the competition. A Singaporean student who designed a waterless washing unit which utilises negative ions, compressed air and deodorants to clean clothes beat all rivals.
