Democracy triumphed in India

I REFER to the report in the South China Morning Post on December 2, headlined, ''Hindus stunned by defeat''.

The state elections in India proved the resolve of the people to stick to democracy and secularism. At the cost of 2,000 lives, the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) had accomplished its objective of demolishing the Babri Masjith. Perhaps it is time now to dismantle the BJP itself. That seems to be the people's verdict. A large section of the Indian people may be poor and illiterate, but they have instinctively chosen what is right for them.

This is people's power - a triumph for democracy.
