Facts on animal rights groups
I MUST comment on S. L. Koo's letter (South China Morning Post, December 6) in which he criticised ''foreign pressure groups such as the International Fund for Animal Welfare and Zoocheck''.
His remarks are not substantiated with factual support or citing of instances. It is true that there have been a couple of letters recently which have questioned how a country with a long history of civilisation could be capable of such cruelties as displayed at the Xili Lake Sanctuary - but they were from individuals who have nothing to do with the above organisations.
Both these organisations have a strict policy of being careful not to offend local sensitivities. They work in all parts of the world and they know that no good comes from being hostile or insulting.
We should react by establishing the facts before making any sweeping judgments and we should establish channels to inform foreigners so that cultural misunderstandings can be minimised.
