Top tips on engineering

Students from four schools received advice on engineering from professionals during a week-long initiative as part of Engineers Week (EWeek).

Organised by IBM China/Hong Kong and the Chinese University's faculty of engineering, the programme aims to help students develop an early interest in engineering and to expose them to the world of technology.

More than 300 junior secondary students from Pentecostal Lam Hon Kwong School, Carmel Secondary School, Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School and CNEC Christian College attended the four half-day sessions last week at their schools.

Professors from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) presented topics ranging from the history of microchips to peer-to-peer networking, while IBM volunteers guided students through games which focused on science and maths skills.

Game winners from each school received certificates and the opportunity to visit the university's research laboratories.

'Through games, we want to show students how engineering science can improve the quality of our lives,' said Peter Yum Tak-shing, dean of engineering at CUHK. 'We hope they can develop an interest in the field and be exposed to the fascinating world of technology.'

EWeek is a global initiative started by IBM in 1990.

Last week's programme marked the beginning of a three-year partnership between the two parties to collaborate on more educational programmes.
