Fusion of east and west
Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School (SGSS) celebrated its 45th anniversary with a musical feast last Friday.
Held at the City Hall Concert Hall, the concert opened with Chinese pieces, including Festival Overture by conductor Kwok Shing-cho and Beating Ghosts by Kuan Nai-chung. They were performed by the school's western and Chinese orchestras.
The school choir sang three songs, including Rutter's For the Beauty of the Earth and Mancini's Moon River, while the alumni association choir performed a medley.
Form Two student Chan Wai-yan and Form Three Tam Wing-yi performed vocal solos from West Side Story with alumnus Ip Man-ho.
Another alumnus, piano soloist Leung Wing-yi, played Rhapsody in Blue with the orchestra and choir.
English teacher Kristina Janavicius was very impressed.
'The two orchestras were beautifully contrasted - the Chinese orchestra in their bright red and blue Chinese jackets and the western orchestra in classic all black,' she said.
'It was really something to see the fresh young faces of all those students deep in concentration, rising to the occasion as their family, friends and peers watched.'
