A security guard stands in front of the construction site of the National Stadium in Beijing yesterday, as workers dangle off the arena that will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Olympic Games.

The stadium's builders faced a big challenge to bring the architects' vision of a 'bird's nest' to life but were on track to complete the steel lattice structure by the end of next year, said National Stadium Company deputy manager Zhang Hengli. 'It's not easy to manufacture according to this shape.'

The web of steel has been completed and workers were preparing to install special 'membrane cushions' into the structure, engineer Wang Wubin said.
