An 11-year-old boy was rescued unconscious from a pool in Siu Sai Wan last night after he was pulled to the bottom by the powerful suction of the pool's filtering system.

The boy, who had been swimming with his 19-year-old brother at the pool in the Island Resort clubhouse at 9pm, had screamed for help.

'A lifeguard and other swimmers managed to pull him back to the side of the pool,' a police spokesman said.

The boy, surnamed Leung, suffered a broken shoulder bone and bruises on his neck. He was in Eastern Hospital in a stable condition.

The brother told police that the boy had screamed out, saying he was being sucked to the bottom of the pool. 'My brother was unconscious while he was pulled to the surface. Luckily, there was a doctor, who carried out first aid.'

A security guard at the club house said the accident happened just before closing time.

'We do not know if it will be open tomorrow. Normally it opens at 7am every morning,' he said. Sino Land, which manages the property, would investigate.

Police are also investigating.
