75-year-old admits selling sex to make ends meet

A 75-year-old woman on welfare was driven to provide sexual services for $20 because she could not get by on her dole payments, a magistrate was told.

Wu Wei-geen, who earlier pleaded guilty to soliciting for an immoral purpose on March 20, yesterday refused to accept a probation report that recommended she receive psychiatric and psychological treatment.

Wu told Chief Magistrate Patrick Li Hon-leung that she knew her actions were wrong, but committed the crime to help make ends meet. She insisted she did not need any medical attention.

Wu said she would now recycle refuse to make extra money instead of working as a prostitute.

The Kwun Tong Court was told a probation officer recommended that there were Christian groups that could help Wu, but she was a follower of the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. Mr Li adjourned sentencing to September 4 pending another probation report and reminded Wu to co-operate with authorities.

The Shanghai native was arrested in a building on Un Chau Street, Shamshuipo, as she left a room with a 60-year-old man.
