Tsoi: numbers king again

Sha Tin Government Secondary School student Tsoi Yun-pui won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad for the fourth time in a row.

This year's competition was held in Slovenia from July 10 to 18.

Among the 90 participating teams, Hong Kong finished 14th - the best result ever - with one gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

China took the overall title, while Russia and South Korea came second and third respectively.

Apart from seventh former Yun-pui, Chung On-yip of Queen Elizabeth School, Fong Pok-wai of SKH Lam Woo Memorial Secondary School and Queen's College's Jack Hui won the team silver medals.

Wong Chiu-wai of St Joseph's College and Yuen Chak-hei of Queen's College took the bronze.

The Hong Kong team members came from the Education and Manpower Bureau's Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme.

Under the scheme, students receive training in a series of enhancement programmes and represent the SAR in the Olympiad.

A pre-competition intensive training camp was organised for the team members, conducted by experienced mathematical trainers from Hong Kong and the mainland.
