Veteran Au Wai-lun believes he still has a valuable role to play with South China in the new season.

Au, winner of the Footballer of the Year award, saw his contract with the Caroliners extended for another season this week after South China were invited to stay in the First Division.

The club have also extended contracts with three other players - goalkeeper Chung Ho-yin, winger Chan Chi-hong and midfielder Yeung Kwong-ching, while forwards Wong Chun-yue and Cheng Siu-wai are close to putting pen to paper.

'Had South China gone down to the Second Division, I would have retired from local football,' said Au, who turns 35 next month.

'But as the club have been invited to stay in the top flight and the squad is likely to be strengthened, I am keen to make a contribution. Hopefully we can win at least one or two titles.'
