Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of Crash by Various Artists

The soundtrack to Crash, which won this year's Best Motion Picture Oscar for its portrayal of racial tension in the United States, is more than just a brilliant film score. The tracks are simple and beautiful pieces in their own right.

Mark Isham, an American musician and composer, completed the score on a very limited budget.

But due to the lack of big orchestral or choral numbers, the soundtrack manages to convey a feeling of intimacy which echoes the mood of the film.

Most of the album comprises electronic tracks produced by simple audio equipment. The opening track Crash sets the ghostly and minimalist tone of the album.

The emotional tracks, such as Saint Christopher and Sense of Touch, which feature amazing Celtic vocals, are powerful without being overpowering. They allow listeners the freedom to reflect on the themes of the movie.

The album ends with two great songs, In the Deep, by Bird York, which was nominated for the Best Song Oscar, and Maybe Tomorrow, by Stereophonics.

Both offer a dose of sentimentality and optimism, ending the album - and the movie - perfectly.
