MAXI yacht Brindabella, owned by George Snow, has been made a 2-1 favourite for the 630-mile Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race starting on December 26.

Northern Territory bookmaker Wayne Cross, who holds the official race book, said he could shorten Brindabella's odds if blustery northerly winds were forecast for the race start.

Pocket maxi Amazon, the 1992 line honours runner-up, was second favourite at 5-1, followed by the newly-built American sloop Cassiopeia, Australian maxi Ragamuffin and downwind flyer Bobsled at 8-1.

Cross, who operates Centre Bet Cross in Alice Springs, warned the fickle conditions of the race could see odds for the 108-boat fleet change dramatically.

''But right now, Brindabella has the strongest chance of a line honours victory,'' he said.

Brindabella dominated her inaugural race, the 408-mile Gosford-to-Lord Howe Island race, taking line honours 16 hours ahead of the yacht in second place.
