For the children

The Gold Coast Hotel is laying it on thick for the children this summer.

Activities include wizard games and hunts, magic classes and a magical shooting gallery. Some will be free for children dining or staying at the hotel.

The Mid-Summer Magical Buffet, lunch and dinner, includes delicacies and desserts in the shape of wizards, castles and elves. Each paying child will receive a set of tickets for the 'Wizard Jungle' (a range of inflatable games), a wizard costume set plus other items. On weekdays the lunch buffet is $180/adult and $108/child, and the dinner buffet $230/adult and $120/child. Add $20 per person for weekend dining. Call 24528498.

Guests wanting to stop over for the night can do so for $998 (Sunday to Thursday), or $1,188 (Friday to Saturday) for a superior seaview room.

The price includes a Wizard Hunt War Game for two, buffet breakfast for two (plus $50 per child), sweets and candies, plus a 30 per cent discount on facial treatments on the premises. Call 24528833.

Wildfire Stanley (28136161) turns into a children's playground this summer. Every Saturday and Sunday until September workshops will be held to show children how to make pizzas, cookies, crepes and desserts. Workshops are for children aged four to 10 years old, and are free for families having lunch or dinner at the restaurant. Participants will be eligible to enter the Wiz-Chef contest on August 20. The restaurant has also created a Fantasyland haven for children, with toys, books and more plus staff on hand to look after them while their parents eat. Throughout summer there will be workshops on dance, aerobics, balloon twisting, art, mime and more. Programmes change weekly, so call the restaurant for details.

Teach them how to make a pizza. All four PizzaExpress locations (Central 28507898; Taikoo Shing 31508800; Tsim Sha Tsui 23177432; and Wan Chai 35280541) will run weekly pizza making workshops for children all summer. Specially trained pizzaiolo chefs will teach children how to toss a pizza crust in the traditional Italian way, and how to sauce and top it. Classes can accommodate 20 children, and workshops will run on Mondays from 3pm to 5pm, at $120 per child. Children under seven must be accompanied by an adult. Bookings are required, so call individual locations for reservations.

Supervised painting sessions return to the Peak Cafe on August 5. 'A Family Canvas' can accommodate up to 15 children ($80 per child). Each child will be supplied with a canvas and paint for a spot of creativity. All of the proceeds will go to Mother's Choice. Sessions take place all of next month and September on Saturdays and Sundays (12 noon to 3pm) . Call 28495111 for reservations.

For something more high-brow, try the culinary classes ($888) offered at the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong. Classes run every Saturday afternoon until August 26. Participants learn how to make cupcakes, vegetable dumplings, sushi rolls and samosas, among other foods.

Classes are followed by a tea buffet at The Cafe. The price includes the cooking class, the apron and chef's hat, the tea buffet for mother and child plus other gifts and vouchers.
