French expat returns to Seoul and finds babies in his fridge

Seoul's expatriate community has been riveted by a gruesome case in which a Frenchman returned from a holiday to find two frozen babies in his refrigerator.

Jean Louis Courjault, who works for a foreign car-parts manufacturer, found the corpses of the two male infants wrapped in plastic and towels on Sunday.

Police are looking for three people they say might be connected to the case: a white teenage girl, a Filipino housekeeper and a friend of Mr Courjault's who had a key to the flat.

After searching the flat, police said they believed the babies, who still had remnants of umbilical cords attached, could have been born there.

'We discovered traces of blood in the bathroom, veranda, and living room,' a police spokesman said.

'Given that a towel, similar to those used in the house, had been used to wrap one of the infants and similarly with the plastic bags, it seems extremely unlikely that the babies were born somewhere else and brought to the house.'

The infants were either Caucasian or mixed-race.

Neighbours reported seeing the teenage girl near the flat. Police are exploring the theory that she could have been pregnant and they have been making inquiries at local foreign schools, nearby hospitals and obstetric clinics.

Police are also trying to trace the housekeeper who is now believed to be abroad.

They have asked the immigration authorities and the South Korean embassy in France for help to track down the friend who was given a key to the flat while Mr Courjault was away. The friend is thought to have left for France.

Air was reportedly found in the infants' lungs, suggesting they were born alive. Results of a post-mortem examination and DNA tests have not been released.

'We won't be able to confirm whether the babies were twins or not until after the DNA testing,' a police investigator said.
