The wait to collect packets of rice blessed by Buddhist monks turned into a blustery ordeal for hundreds of elderly people yesterday when an amber rainstorm struck.

The organisers of the Hungry Ghost Festival handout at Carpenter Road Park in Kowloon City were accused of 'indirectly abusing' the elderly, but they said they had done their best.

Wind and rain lashed about 500 people as they lined up for the annual distribution.

Against Elderly Abuse director Roy Lam Man-chiu said the organisers 'obviously failed' to make adequate plans. The organising committee said it had problems organising rain shelters. 'If they think this is too exhausting ... they shouldn't have come,' a spokesman said.
