Keep a watchful eye on our robot friends

The world is getting more and more technologically advanced. Scientists recently built a robot that can run 6km in an hour. In the future, we might see robots competing against humans in athletic events.

Most people think that robots are here to serve us, but as robots get smarter, will they always obey our orders?

One day, they may overthrow us and treat humans as slaves.

People don't stand a chance against these creatures made of metal as they will be smarter and stronger that humans.

They will be able to do things we can't do.

I think scientists should invent ways to monitor robots in order to prevent them from harming humans.

Robots can help us a lot and are important in our future lives.

But we should bear in mind that they may betray us and pose a great danger to us.

Think twice before getting a pet

A lot of my friends keep pets. They share with me the joy they feel and the problems they face with their animals.

I don't have any pets now, but I used to have two rabbits when I was 12.

The two rabbits were given to me by my aunt as she didn't have much time to take care of them.

For the first few days, I felt excited. I played with them a lot and fed them myself.

At the time, I thought having pets was amazing.

When I felt unhappy, I could tell them about it. They were the best listeners because they could keep my secrets.

Unfortunately, after about a month, one of them stopped eating. I was very worried because he used to be so energetic.

After a few days, he died. I was so upset I cried for two days.

After the death of my rabbit, I realised we must think twice before keeping pets.

They need to be treated as if they are our children. We must be responsible for them.

They can live very short lives, and they may die soon after we befriend them. We must be sure we are strong enough to face this.

Words can be a rose or a weapon

Words are powerful. If you change only one word in a sentence, the meaning can be totally different.

Saying: 'I love you' can make others feel good, but if we change the word 'love' into its opposite - 'hate' - it will make others feel unhappy.

Words can be a beautiful rose, or a weapon that can cause great destruction.

Take care how you use words.

How to stay cool

The weather is extremely hot this summer, and many people have suffered from heatstroke.

We should not underestimate the seriousness of this illness.

To prevent getting heatstroke, drink at least eight glasses of water each day.

Also, stay indoors with a fan or air conditioner.

Wear a cap or carry an umbrella when you need to go out, to protect you from the sun.

Swimming is a good way to relieve summer heat. You could also try eating ice cream, but brush your teeth thoroughly soon afterwards to keep your teeth healthy.

Some elderly people say that if you can stay calm, you won't feel hot, but I don't find this to be true.

Remember to set the temperature on your air conditioner to 25 degrees Celsius so that you don't use an excessive amount of energy.

Even though you may feel hot and sweaty, try not to shower three times a day, as this wastes water.

Your health is in your hands.

The right seat

I'm writing in response to the letter, 'You cannot always choose your neighbour' (Young Post, July 21).

A student wrote in to say she is unhappy because her form teacher made her change seats in class.

I have experienced the same thing. I dislike my neighbour and asked my class teacher if I could sit elsewhere, but she said that is not for me to decide.

I feel angry at my teacher. I think a good neighbour will help me to study. If I always think that where I am sitting is bad for me, I won't pay attention to my work.

Teachers should not make us sit with people we don't like.

Best of books

I recently watched a TV programme about what makes a popular book. Most of the authors of best-selling books are creative, imaginative and write stories in a new way.

Some stories are set in imaginary worlds, while others are based on historical fact.

No matter which kind of books you prefer, you can learn a lot from reading.
