Classy cuppa

Anyone seeking upmarket afternoon tea in Central should consider Antique. Opened late last year as a patisserie, the small space on Lyndhurst Terrace has recently been expanded to create a classy-looking tea shop. Efforts to boost the posh-quotient are evident.

On entering, guests are greeted by waitresses in dark suits. There's also a chandelier and a display case holding beautiful pastries. Echoing the ritzy style of the entrance is the rococo interior, complete with an art nouveau staircase in the small courtyard. A statue of the Chinese god of longevity in one corner is the only eyesore. But this style slip-up is compensated for by the afternoon tea set ($198 a person, including tea or coffee), which comprises a hearty assortment of small cakes and scones served on a three-tier cake stand. For lighter alternatives, cake is served by the slice, including blueberry cheesecake ($32) and almond tart ($35). The tearoom can seat 12 people. A warning, though: the air-conditioning is chilly so bring something to keep warm.

Antique is open Sunday to Thursday, 11am-8.30pm; Friday 11am-9.30pm; public holidays, 1pm-8.30pm. It's at 32 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, tel: 2542 2816.
