Act now to save energy - you can make a difference

Most of us switch on the air conditioner during hot weather, but we don't realise the damage it can do to our planet.

Air conditioners release chemicals that can lead to global warming.

Besides, we should try to save energy. We can use fans instead of air conditioners.

We should also switch off all the lights when we leave a room. If we have to use air conditioners, we should set the temperature at 25 degrees Celsius.

We should take action before it's too late.

Thanks for your letter, Hiu-tung. I'm glad to hear that you are concerned about the environment and prepared to do something about it. The bottom line is, if we act we can make a difference.

Here at the South China Morning Post we, too, are talking about air-conditioner use and attitudes are beginning to change. Following in Chief Executive Donald Tsang's footsteps, the Post's Editor in Chief Mark Clifford is encouraging staff to keep to the 25 degree standard.

A concern for the environment must happen everywhere - in classrooms, offices and homes. I'm happy to hear you are part of this change for the good.
