Record times for HK stars

School swimming stars Geoffrey Cheah and Hannah Wilson set four Hong Kong records, plus a clutch of junior and age group records at the prestigious British Open and Youth Championships this week.

Geoffrey, 15, and Hannah 17, have spent the summer training in the United Kingdom, and their results will give them a boost ahead of the Hong Kong Swimming Championships.

'It was fantastic swimming,' said Mike Fasching, who coaches both Hannah and Geoffrey for the Harry Wright International Swimming organisation.

'They are both well prepared for the Hong Kong championships, and I'm sure they will look forward to performing like this in front of their friends and families.'

Hannah, a student at Island School, was racing in the 16 and 17 age group category at the championships in Sheffield, England. She won the 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle in times of 56.51 seconds and 2 minutes 03.24 seconds. Both were new Hong Kong and age group records.

Her efforts will give her encouragement ahead of the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships which start next Wednesday in Victoria, Canada. She will be back for the Hong Kong championships from September 1-3 at Kowloon Park.

Geoffrey, a West Island School student, broke the Hong Kong, junior and age group records in the 100m backstroke and 50m backstroke events, with times of 58.76 and 27.59.

Racing in the 15 and 16 age category, he won the 100m backstroke.

Later, Geoffrey set a Hong Kong junior record in the 100m freestyle in a time of 53.20, coming third. He also set a new junior record in the 200m backstroke in a time of 2.08.71, placing fifth. He also set a 50m freestyle personal best time of 24.55 seconds.

The standard at the competition was high as this event is deemed the perfect platform for Britain's best young splash sensations to make a name for themselves.
