Former official enters no plea to misuse of funds

Former deputy privacy commissioner Tony Lam Wing-hong entered no plea yesterday in Eastern Court to four charges of corruption over allegations he misused public funds on overseas trips while in office. Lam, 58, has been charged with one count of misconduct in public office and three of using documents with intent to deceive the privacy commissioner. The Independent Commission Against Corruption alleges Lam dishonestly claimed the cost of return air fares, accommodation, meals and other expenses for travel to Melbourne to attend meetings between February and July last year. It also alleged Lam used false document to apply for overseas subsistence allowances totalling A$4,288 (HK$25,540) between August 2001 and October 2003, with intent to deceive the privacy commissioner. Lam was released on $100,000 cash bail and another $100,000 surety.

Suspicious package found in garden investigated

A box bearing a delivery and logistics company's name, and containing chemicals suspected to be explosives, was found in a flower bed near Kai Cheung House on the Kai Yip Estate in Choi Hung by a cleaner. The package bore a destination address in Iran and a return address in Shenzhen. An explosives disposal unit was called to carry out a controlled explosion. No explosives were found.

Six Hongkongers held in Tokyo for drug smuggling

Six Hong Kong residents, aged between 23 and 28, were arrested at Tokyo airport for attempting to smuggle 14kg of Ice, worth HK$20.5 million, into Japan. Hong Kong Narcotics Bureau said the arrest of the three men and three women followed a month-long joint probe.

There were four winners of last night's Mark Six draw. Each won HK$16,629,415. The winning numbers were 10, 17, 19, 27, 37 and 38, with the extra number 26. Ten people won the second prize of HK$637,930. There were 621 third-prize winners.
