CHILDREN just want to have fun. However, parents often worry that their offspring fail to learn enough.

   The solution may be found at the Christmas Showcase where a number of the exhibitors will display educational toys and games.

  The Showcase will run from today until Tuesday at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

  A 2,000-piece jigsaw puzzle and game depicting the major events of China's 5,000-history will make its first appearance at the Showcase.

   Developed by ADD Fortune Limited, the Stories of the Dragon puzzle can also double as a game similar to chess.

  The Stories of the Dragon consists of two separate sets of jigsaw puzzles, each with 1,000 pieces.

  The jigsaw tracks the unification of China, records how the East met the West and even depicts how Hong Kong will become China's Special Administrative Region after 1997.

  The puzzles are available at a discounted price of $168 and come with free gifts. These include a book on Chinese civilisation and two posters, one of which depicts Hong Kong's history.

  Another exhibitor with an educational product is Group Sense Limited, which will show its new Genius Book.

  Ideal for three to eight-year-olds, the Genius Book, priced at $798, is a handheld touch-screen computer that talks to the user.

  The computer reads stories in Cantonese, Mandarin or English while showing pictures from the stories. Each computer will come with 31 nature picture cards.

  Another electronic talking computer for children on sale at the fair will be the Conquest PC, which maker Team Concepts Electronics Limited claims ''helps develop comprehension, instils eagerness to learn, promotes basic school skills and teaches computer familiarity''.

  Designed for children aged seven and older, the Conquest PC can be used for language training, math-building activities, memory exercises and music and animation games. It costs $745.

  Foreign language and other subject cartridges are sold separately.

  For those children who only want to have fun, LEGO will be at the fair.

  In addition to selling its well-known building bricks, the LEGO team will construct a three-metre-high Santa Claus and a two-metre-high Christmas tree for charity.

  For a minimum contribution of $10, members of the public may help build the LEGO Santa and the tree.

  Prizes valued at $20,000 will be awarded to visitors taking part in the guess-the-number-of-bricks competition for the LEGO models.
