AMONG the many award-winning products on display at this year's Christmas Showcase is an exceptional grill which is just based on a lot of hot air.

The ''Air Grill'', manufactured by Chai Wan company SMC Microwave Products uses a revolutionary process to produce fast-moving hot air at a speed of up to 800 metres per minute within the enclosed container.

It uses the terminology of air convection but, by being able to reach every part of the cavity, even cooking is achieved without having to turn the food.

Also, as a result of the powerful fan-forced convection technology, the Air Grill cooks three times faster than a conventional oven.

These features helped the company to win the 1993 Governor's Award for Industry at the Federation of Hong Kong Industries Consumer Product Design Award.

The Air Grill is designed to cater for a host of functions - broiling, grilling, steaming, frying, baking, roasting, toasting and rotissering - while maintaining a cool lid throughout.

As food is cooked in the grill by hot moving air, it can maintain its original juice and outlook and can hold its original delicacy without mixing flavours with other items being cooked simultaneously.

The grill is also designed for health-conscious users who are looking for oil-free and low-fat cooking.

The rapid cooking speed and even heating melts off the fat in the food to leave a succulent but healthy finish.

As with other SMC products, the Air Grill is designed to be a safe, user-friendly appliance. The high temperature, heat resistant plastic see-through lid enables the user to monitor the cooking progress. It can also be easily detached for cleaning.

The non-stick cooking pan and specially designed high-low rack for different cooking needs also enhances convenience.

A major safety feature is a mercury switch which cuts off the electricity supply when the upper part of the grill is opened at an angle greater than 15 degrees or when the body is not standing on a stable, flat surface.

In addition, a dual overheat thermostatic protection is employed to avoid overheating.

Promotions and cooking demonstrations using the Air Grill will be held by SMC Microwave Products at the Christmas Showcase.

The company will also highlight other products from its range.
