Mother stole after fortune teller's advice
An unemployed mother said she stole from a supermarket after receiving advice from a fortune teller that she should steal to protect the health of her son, a court heard yesterday.
But the claim by Chan Chui-fa, 38, was rejected by Tsuen Wan Acting Principal Magistrate Lambert Lee Ka-chai who described it as 'ridiculous'.
'You said you were told by the fortune teller that your 10-year-old son's health would have problems if you did not steal. This is ridiculous.
'Don't take any more groundless advice from the fortune tellers. That will save you from trouble,' Mr Lam said.
Chan was fined HK$1,500 after pleading guilty to one count of theft.
The court heard that on July 27 she stole one bag of cherries, a bag of chicken wings, some frozen pork and two frozen fish, together worth HK$136.50, from a ParknShop supermarket in Tsing Yi.
ParknShop staff saw her putting the pork in her bag without paying and found the other items after a search.
