Too much medicine can weaken your body

Most people go to the doctor whenever they have a sniffle, a cough or a sore throat. They don't think about the consequences.

These conditions will go away. If we frequently take antibiotics, our bodies will become resistant.

We will become even more ill and will need stronger antibiotics.

I think the government should warn the public about over-using antibiotics. Some people think that when they are sick, the more medicine they have the better. They are mistaken.

We should learn to respect antibiotics.

Often the best remedy is to drink plenty of water and get lots of rest. This is also cheaper.

Methodist College Thanks for your letter, Joey. You have chosen a topic that I feel strongly about. Doctors in Hong Kong seem all too happy to give out antibiotics, and a lot of the time they really aren't necessary.

If you have a simple case of the flu, you don't need antibiotics. A good rest, plenty of fluids and vitamin C and you will be fine in a couple of days.

Of course, the best thing to do is to keep yourself healthy and your immune system strong, that way you will be less likely to get sick in the first place. Plenty of sleep, a good diet and exercise are all you need to stay healthy. It's old advice, but good advice.
