UPDATED : Saturday, 26 August, 2006, 12:00am

What drives it? A super-charged 5.4-litre V-8 engine, with a six-speed manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive on PP255/45R18 front tyres, P285/40ZR18 on the rear, with aluminium rims. Rack and pinion steering with power assist with 14-inch cross-drilled Brembo discs up front and 13-inchers at the rear.

How fast is it? 500 brake horsepower@ 6000rpm. Caranddriver.com says it tops at 248km/h and sprints to 96km/h in 4.6 seconds, one-third of a second slower than the Chevrolet Corvette.

How safe is it? Three-point safety belts for all seating positions, with reminder chime; dual-stage driver and front-passenger air bags with crash-severity sensor, driver-seat-position sensor and front-passenger weight sensor; seat-deployed side air bags for driver and front passenger; child latch anchors for rear seats; anti-lock braking system; traction-control system; remote keyless entry and more.

How thirsty is it? Very, at 5.31km per litre on a 16-gallon (72.8 litre) tank.

Nice touches: Those Le Mans stripes would look good in tunnel traffic. Stereo can be upgraded to 1,000watts.

Available: About US$44,000 in the US, if you can get one. But then, this is the fastest, most rippling, medallion-swinging Mustang ever.
