Have Your say

Guard against unwanted pregnancy

Abortion is an ethical issue that divides society and illegal abortions still take place.

In mainland China, many backstreet clinics conduct illegal abortions.

I have heard some young people from Hong Kong go to the mainland for an abortion.

Young women who have unprotected sex with their boyfriends have a high risk of becoming pregnant.

When they find out about their unplanned pregnancy they choose to have an illegal abortion because they do not want to be a mother.

People should not have illegal abortions because the child is innocent and we should not stop these babies from being born.

We should promote the use of condoms to prevent such cases.

Treasure every book

I am responding to the letter 'Keep reading - knowledge is power' (Young Post, July 28). I strongly agree with Chan Po-lam's comments because my gold is also in books.

I enjoy reading because books show me new worlds and are filled with knowledge.

Leisure reading is different from reading school books because I am more relaxed. It is a retreat from the turmoil of the world.

There is a golden house inside every book; there is also a new world inside each one.

Try to read more. You will be surprised.

Reduce pollution

Every country is responsible for controlling air pollution.

Developed countries should use technology to capture and store carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants. They should also encourage people to save energy.

But their pollution emissions are increasing and if we ignore this problem it will get worse.

Less developed countries can also help reduce air pollution

as they move towards industrialising their cities.

They can organise tree-planting campaigns and educate citizens about the importance of saving energy.

Some developing countries, such as China, are richer and can encourage the use of renewable energy.

If countries co-operate to cut air pollution, this problem can be solved more easily and effectively.

Since it affects the world, everyone should help reduce pollution to provide a better environment for the future.

Lesson in kindness In a recent school project, I had to team up with about six classmates to collect first-hand information using various techniques, such as

conducting interviews and taking photographs.

We came across many difficulties during this project. For example, when we were taking photos outside a shop the owner came out and asked if we worked for the government.

We said 'no', and were shocked he had mistaken us for government workers. But he would not believe us and kept harassing us so we had no choice but to leave.

We interviewed another shop owner who was kind and helpful. She was great.

We made mistakes and had to redo our interviews several times. We wasted a lot of time and although we didn't get much information, I learned about kindness and in the end our team had fun.

Watch TV wisely

Teenagers and children like watching television, but it is difficult to choose an educational programme to watch because there are so many choices and parents want us to learn more.

Children or teenagers can choose English language programmes such as films. When you watch a film you need to know the meaning of the story and the conversations to be able to understand it.

It is helpful for learning English because you will be listening to the conversation carefully.

Sometimes when I watch a film I will copy what a character says and it helps me learn to pronounce my words properly.

So how can parents say watching TV is a waste of time? It's how you can make television an educational tool, but remember to take care of your eyes - do not sit too close to the screen.

Give us green belts

I have recently read about the redevelopment of Kwun Tong.

I always go there and I hope there are plans for a green belt because the pollution is quite bad from all the transport vehicles such as buses. I hope there will be more trees and open space. There are also many children living in the area, so a green belt will give them a good place to play in. Such green spaces would also be good for elderly people to do their morning exercises. I hope there's at least one green belt because Kwun Tong needs it.
