A 59-year-old Chinese herbs dealer was yesterday confirmed to have the pig-borne Streptococcus suis infection, the fifth case this year.

The man was in stable condition at North District Hospital where he was admitted last Friday.

The case was classified as local as the man had no recent travel history.

His job as a middleman for suppliers of Chinese herbs has been discounted as a source of infection, said a spokesman for the Centre for Health Protection.

The man, who lives alone, sometimes cooks for himself but did not recall having handled pork, the spokeswoman added. Investigations are continuing on how he was infected, she said.
