Tile style

A fully tiled entrance wouldn't have the impact of these shabby-chic, tile-inlaid wooden steps outside Vietnamese shop Socola (45 Ton That Thiep St, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), which sells antique homeware, including stained-glass panels and 100-year-old tiles from Japan, priced from US$2 to US$8 each. For those who want to replicate the look indoors, ceramic tiles should be installed before the wood flooring because it's easier to work around smaller inlays (see www.hardwood.org).

Any difference in height will require plywood to be inserted under the tiles to make the materials level. When the tiles have set, they should be protected with masking tape before laying the flooring.
