Greed the reason for Fok's arms deal

HOW dare Thomas Fok (Sunday Morning Post, December 12) insult Hong Kong people's intelligence by claiming his conscience forced him to sell 15,000 automatic weapons in an illegal arms deal? His conscience played no part in his illegal actions - his pocket was his only interest, driven by unabashed greed. Did his conscience consider the lives of those men, women and children whose lives would be altered or destroyed as a result of his actions? He has disgraced his family, his country, and himself as a direct result of his lust for money.

Even worse is his claim that he would do it again if the cause was ''right''. What is his idea of ''right''? As an American and a Hong Kong resident I am truly ashamed that either country allows a man like Mr Fok to return to be among us.

NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED MY HEART goes out to Mr Thomas Fok. The man was in it for a good cause - and he ended up in prison. There is just no justice in the world.

The only consolation to those of us without the means for similar acts of good will is that now he is a ''better, stronger person''. Mr Fok, the kind of compassionate soul that he is, has set himself some higher goals. He might even forget about profit altogether and do it for charitable reasons; perhaps something like supplying food to the starving masses of both former and present Yugoslavia.
