Hong Kong cyclists learnt a hard lesson as they managed only a disappointing seventh in the road race team time trial in Al-Khor, north of Doha, yesterday.

Comprising Wong Kam-po, the individual road race champion, Cheung King-wai, Wu Kin-san and Chan Chun-hing, the team completed the 70.3km course in one hour, 29 minutes and 41 seconds.

Kazakhstan won with a time of 1.24.40 with Iran second and Japan third out of 16 teams.

'It was strange as four of them came to the finish together,' said coach Shen Jinkang. 'Normally, there should be one rider trailing after giving his all in the race. It shows they have not given their best. This is something I will not accept.'

Shen said the Asian Games was the highest level of competition in the region and riders could not expect to win a medal by just completing the race. 'It is a do-or-die game,' he said. 'If you are not giving your best, you are out.'

Shen said the riders now should know clearly what they need to give.

'I will sit down and talk with them tonight. The road race is now over and they need the right attitude before the track events.

'The track is even more demanding as winning or losing will happen in a split second. You have to focus throughout the race or your winning chance will be gone.'
