Happy as punch
International kung fu star Jet Li Lianjie is happy he doesn't need to just punch and kick in his next film, Peter Chan Ho-sun's Ci Ma. 'Peter was well prepared when he asked me to play this movie. The first thing he told me was that this was not a kung fu movie because he knows I won't do kung fu movies any more,' he said.
The movie, co-starring Andy Lau Tak-wah and Takeshi Kaneshiro, has a US$40 million budget. The film is an adaptation of a Chinese historical story. Filming started in Beijing earlier this week. Martial art movie director Zhang Che also made a movie, The Blood Brothers, based on this tale.
Chan stressed that the new film was not a remake of Zhang's 1973 movie, but a film portraying the brotherhood between the three characters and the cruelty of war.
'Many people told me that Peter is a genius, and said I must play in his movie. So, I decided to take the offer,' said Li (right).
The three leading actors will play bandits and brothers in the movie, which opens in December next year.
Asked how he will get the inspiration to play the character, the Fearless star replied jokingly: 'I'll rob a bank tonight.'
The 43-year-old said he learned something from each project. 'I regard myself as a student in every movie I make,' Li says.
'Every director has his own talents. Through their eyes, they discover the actors' hidden talents.'
Li said the role was a big challenge.
