Arrogant teddy bear learns about sharing

Theatre Ensemble's latest production hopes to promote the spirit of sharing this festive season.

Hugga Hugga Teddy Bear is a children's musical directed by stage artist and comedian, Jim Chim Sui-man.

It tells the story of an arrogant teddy bear who is rejected by children. While all the toys have been snapped up before Christmas, no one wants to buy Smarty Bear.

'Normally teddy bears are very cute but this one is annoying and he thinks it is a must that people should take him home,' said Chim.

Angry and lonely, Smarty Bear asks Sandra Claus - the sister of Santa Claus - for help. Sandra Claus introduces him to The Third World of Toys, where old and broken playthings discarded by their child masters live.

'We feel that Hong Kong is a very affluent city and children must learn to share and give as well as take,' said Chim.

The show also tackles the question of equality. 'For example, what do we think of people who are poor or disadvantaged?' asked Chim.

'How should we share things with them and not see ourselves as being superior?'

Smarty Bear makes friends with old toys, such as Robot. Together they help Tin Soldier to look for his long-lost friend, Princess Ballet.

During the search, they meet the King of Combat from a video game. 'Computers have made our lives more convenient. But computer games often involve combat, fighting and war. That's why we made King of Combat a rather villainous character,' Chim said.

While offering positive messages, the show provides light-hearted entertainment for children and adults alike, thanks to the colourful characters, catchy songs and clever lyrics.

'We have tried

to make it quite funny. We are proud of the results,' said Chim.

He said many people think children's drama should be simple and not be taken seriously.

'It's important to let adults enjoy the show, too. It's only then that they will come and watch the show together with their children. Otherwise, they may just buy tickets for their children,' said Chim.
