Sketches

The City Festival next month will have a special focus on local art and artists to mark the 10th anniversary of the handover, according to the Hong Kong Fringe Club.

Spotlight Hong Kong will feature works by local artists, including nine choreographers/dancers (below), Theatre du Pif, cinematographer Christopher Doyle and some of the most active art spaces in town (including Fotan, 1a Space and Para/Site) in a cross-media lineup that aims to offer snapshot views of Hong Kong arts today.

'Rather than taking a sweeping panoramic shot of our city, I've chosen to do it by making vignettes, each telling its own story - either about our city, or having a certain resonance with what happens there,' says Fringe Club director Benny Chia Chun-heng.

These works - plus a host of other programmes that will not be staged locally - will travel to Singapore in February as part of a reciprocal exchange with the Lion City.

The rest of the festival will be made up of cabarets, stand-up comedy, theatre productions and exhibitions from Australia, Britain, Japan, Italy and Germany, as well as a series of symposiums.

City Festival has been an annual event since 1983. Tickets for next year's shows, which run from January 11 to 27, go on sale today. Inquiries: 2521 7251
