Joey out on a limb for Safari

Joey Yung Cho-yee will test the waters in her next live show with a new concept - a fantasy storyline with the singer encountering stars dressed as animals.

Singer Anthony Wong Yiu-ming will be special guest for Safari at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on January 26, and he'll be joined by Hins Cheung King-hin, at17, Sun Boyz, Yumiko Cheng Hei-yi and Vincent Wong Ho-shun.

'This show will be like a try out for me,' says Yung (left) who is basing her character on a futuristic Alice in Wonderland and it will be a testing ground for future projects. 'I've always been very keen on doing a musical. My ultimate goal is to do a musical at the Coliseum and this show is the first step.'

It's another challenge for the 26-year-old on top of her concert series with violinist Yao Jue and the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra from the Czech Republic earlier this year, in which she overcame a vocal cord problem.

Yung also vowed to spend Christmas practising for a mainland reality TV show based on dance contests. She revealed her confidence was shaken so badly in Let's Shake It that she pleaded with her manager to let her quit.

'I only had three days to prepare,' recalled Yung who has now progressed from the Latin stage to the next round. 'The practise was so strict and the contest tough. At the time I really couldn't stand the pressure. I even asked my manager if I could give up and I'd pay compensation.'

It was only when the singer was browsing the show's website and saw messages of support that she had a change of heart. Yung is now determined to continue that positive attitude in Safari. 'I haven't worked with so many artists for a performance. I'm very hands-on this time and I've spent a lot of time communicating with other performers and the director.'

Cheung will play a deer and narrate the show's forest fantasy. At17 will be zebras, Sun Boyz monkeys, while Cheng and Wong will be tigers. Yung will also perform a jazz dance with Cheng.
