Policeman to appear on fraud charge

Martin Wong

A policeman will appear in Kowloon City Court tomorrow accused of trying to cheat a burglary victim out of HK$100,000.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption has charged Cheung Ho-pong, 32, with fraud, alleging that he tried to obtain the money by claiming it would be used as 'bait' to buy back the stolen property.

The charge alleges Cheung made 'a false representation to a victim in a suspected burglary case investigated by the police', the ICAC said in a statement given out late yesterday.

It said the alleged fraud offence took place between August 23 and 24, 2004.

Cheung allegedly claimed that he would use the money provided by the victim to arrange an informant to buy back a quantity of suspected stolen goods from a Filipino woman with a view to solving the burglary case, the ICAC added.

He has been released on ICAC bail.
