Air pollution. I can stop eating tainted food or drinking polluted water, but I can't stop breathing. Many new buildings have sprung up near my home in Tsuen Wan. Being close to each other, the skyscrapers limit the air flow in my neighbourhood. It feels stuffy sometimes. I've stopped going to Mong Kok now because the air is very bad and could pose a serious threat to my health.

I'm most worried about air pollution. I saw on TV that many expatriate professionals have left Hong Kong because of the worsening air quality. The problem is so serious that it has begun to affect our economy. I lived in a hostel far from the city centre in my first year at university. During that time, my allergic rhinitis was cured. But the symptoms returned after I left the hostel. The government needs to do something about the problem.

Deforestation is my biggest concern. Trees play a very important role in our lives. They produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. Excessive logging can lead to global warming, as there won't be enough trees left to absorb the heat-trapping gases. The ice in the North and South Poles will melt and low-lying areas will be flooded. Instead of pursuing development at the expense of the environment, people should cherish the place they call home. Otherwise, we will have to pay a heavy price.

Air pollution is the most serious environmental problem in Hong Kong. Clear skies are very rare, as exhaust fumes from vehicles pollute the air. The Blue Sky Campaign launched by the chief executive is mere talk. He asked people to set the temperature of air conditioners at 25 degrees Celsius and turn off the engines of idling cars. But not many people listen to him. An electronic road pricing system could help reduce traffic congestion.

Global warming is the most pressing issue. I heard on the news recently that all the ice in the North and South Poles will melt in 40 years and swamp low-lying areas. Animals living there will suffer as they will lose their habitats. Governments around the world emphasise economic growth and ignore environmental concerns. They should stop being selfish and strengthen legislation to punish people and companies who pollute the environment.
