Before the first of his two concerts with the HK Phil last night, Jose Carreras (left) talked about his Asia tour that has taken him from the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Doha to more eastern locales such as Seoul, Taipei and Hong Kong.

'It's one of the most beautiful cities in the world,' said the 60-year-old tenor, who has sung in the city many times in solo performances or with the Three Tenors. 'But I have only one hour to get around and enjoy it as much as we can later. I think maybe my wife is going to enjoy the shopping malls more than me this time.'

The Barcelona native seems more focused on following his home football side that this year is again in the hunt for a La Liga championship. 'It has always been my team. It's one of the greatest in the world and it's more than just a football team. It shows to the world the identity and roots of Catalonia and it is very important.'

Carreras' second show is at the Cultural Centre tonight.
