Sentence means little, wife says
The wife of Constable Jacky Chu Chun-kwok says she feels justice can never be done despite the increased sentence passed on her husband's attacker yesterday.
Speaking from Guangzhou, where her husband is receiving medical treatment, Chu Choi Yin-ping said the increased sentence from six to 10 years made no difference to her.
'Justice is relative. There will never be justice for me,' Mrs Chu said.
'I will not sleep better at night just because the sentence has been increased.'
But Mrs Chu said she was grateful that the Department of Justice had sought to appeal against the original sentence.
'I am happy that someone has helped us.'
Constable Chu's mother, Lee Lai-hing, said the increased sentence would at least have some deterrent effect.
'I just hope [the attacker] will learn his lesson and turn over a new leaf when he is released,' she said.
Mrs Chu said her biggest concern was her husband's condition. Constable Chu's state has improved since he has been in Guangzhou and he has progressed to a liquid diet, she said. But he is still unable to express his feelings verbally.
