Pushing the boat out

Street entertainers and visitors watch from the waterfront as a junk sails past to mark the launch of the seventh Wan Chai Festival.

The ceremony, which kicked off at Golden Bauhinia Square, Wan Chai, included a land, sea and air parade, featuring 10 teams of parade artists, 26 boats and five helicopters. A carnival with game booths also added to the jovial atmosphere.

Housewife Ha Tsan-ming, who was there with her seven-year-old son, said: 'The atmosphere is quite good. My son wanted to come. He likes looking at boats, helicopters and cars. You don't get to do that much around here.'

The month-long festival, which runs every four years, will host 44 events.
