Check out the Pinewood Battery if you visit the Peak
A governor's summer residence designed more than 100 years ago was unearthed during construction work on the Peak.
I was surprised by the discovery, because I had never heard about this historical site before.
Many students think that learning history is all about memorising, and that it's not related to their daily life. I don't agree.
History is all around us and it has economic value. Historical monuments can attract tourists.
You can learn history from textbooks as well as outside the classroom. You could discover something new by taking a walk around the city.
I'm going to visit the Peak very soon.

If you do go to the Peak, I suggest that rather than taking the bus back down the mountain, you walk. The Morning Trail will take you down to Conduit Road, and only takes about half an hour to do. On the way down, look out for the signs for Pinewood Battery - this path will take you to a ruined battery built in the early 20th century and destroyed during the Japanese invasion of December 1941.
The diversion through the battery will add another 30 minutes onto your walk, but it's well worth it. If you do go, e-mail me about it.
