Hey? Did you see Joey's dad's new car?

No, what kind is it?

He bought himself a brand-new beemer!

He can afford it. He has a really cushy job!

Yeah, I know he does, the car is pretty glitzy!

Mmmm ... some people think a brand-new car makes them happy.

Well, if that makes him happy. Who cares?

I would prefer to spend my money on a nice home. I think cars cause too much pollution.

Language Points

1. Beemer: slang for a car produced by German company BMW.

Example: I hope to save enough money to buy a beemer one day.

2. Cushy: describes doing something comfortable for a living, with ample rewards; a job that doesn't involve much effort, but is profitable.

Example: I had a real cushy job as a salesman when I worked only three days a week and earned a lot of money.

3. Glitzy: means that something is showy or flashy; to glitter (possibly German origins) or sparkle. It can also mean pretentious or something is jazzy, but in bad taste.

Example: She wore a glitzy, sequinned purple gown to the wedding.

Some people like to show off their wealth to others. Is this important to you? Do you notice what people buy or wear? Why are brands important to some people but not to others? How do brands affect your life?
