Electrik by Maksim

Judy Ngao

Croatian pianist Maksim Mrvica continues to break down the barriers between classical and pop music in Electrik. In an era when young audiences more or less ignore traditional classical music, it's rewarding to see artists mixing classical with the contemporary in a bid to target a different kind of listener.

Following in the footsteps of all-girl quartet Bond and violinist Vanessa Mae, Maksim's stylish and sexy image encourages young people to listen. The first track on Electrik, The Gypsy Maid, is a powerful opener. In fact, most of the pieces involve fierce piano-playing from Maksim, whose musical talents are undeniable. His rendition of Hall of the Mountain King is extremely enjoyable, and has an almost cinematic quality.

The artist also caters to those who prefer more traditional forms by including several tracks without electronic instruments. These include Beyond Rangoon/Waters of Irrawaddy and Carmen Entr'acte, both of which are beautiful, slow-tempo pieces that will certainly appeal to any lover of classical music.
