The proposed fair competition law will not affect Hong Kong's business environment, tycoon Thomas Kwok Ping-kwong said yesterday. The vice-chairman and managing director of Sun Hung Kai Properties said: 'I do not think a fair competition law would affect the business sector greatly. We shall be very pleased to see a law that is helpful to fair competition. Hong Kong has always been a society with fair competition.'
Tragedy spurs calls to keep out container trucks
About 200 residents of Fairview Park, a private housing estate in Yuen Long, met last night to demand the government take urgent action to stop container trucks from using Fairview Park Boulevard, where 12-year-old Kam Ho-wah was killed by a truck last week while cycling to school with his brother.
mainlanders suspected of smuggling oil arrested
Three fishing vessels were impounded and 13 mainlanders arrested on suspicion of smuggling 108,000 litres of unmanifested marked oil, worth HK$500,000. Customs officers intercepted the vessels near the Ninepin Group and Waglan Island after they were spotted bunkering a large quantity of oil off Sung Kong.
fire services plans to check 9,000 buildings
The Fire Services Department plans to inspect 9,000 private commercial-residential buildings, completed before 1973, in the next 10 years to ensure compliance with new fire safety standards, its chief Kwok Jing-keung said. Fire officers would provide technical advice to help owners in upgrading.
Dog attacks girl
A two-year-old girl suffered injuries to her face after she was attacked by a dog at Pang Uk Tsuen, Tsiu Keng, in Sheung Shui. The girl was treated at North District Hospital.
blackmail suspect
New Territories North police arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of blackmail. Police said a drinks company contacted them after receiving a blackmail letter.
