It's that time of year when Hongkongers start taking Lunar New Year leave to start mahjong marathons with friends and relatives. These can last for days and nights as we forget to eat, sleep and dress the kids.

Tuen Mun Hospital takes this opportunity to warn the public that the marathon games mean the holiday season is a dangerous time for stroke and heart disease patients, and those with high blood pressure. So don't get too excited about winning or losing.

The hospital said people should rest between rounds and exercise their neck, wrists, hands and shoulders. But then, fear not: many connoisseurs are so dexterous in their manipulation of mahjong pieces that they could do it with one hand even if they had a stroke and were paralysed down one side.
