cold comfort

Hong Kong's weather may be giving everyone the shivers, but it seems ice-cream aficionados are unfazed by the cold, be it inside or out. A recent Friday night found cloaked and scarfed gelato fans queueing to sample the delights of Gusto Gelato, a little outlet squeezed into bustling Causeway Bay. The servery has seating for 20 and offers 30 flavours of gelato and ice cream, ranging from the traditional fruity mixes and chocolate and vanilla favourites to more exotic concoctions, such as tiramisu, creme caramel, blueberry cheese yogurt ... there's even a Yakult-flavoured version. Best of all, these frozen treats can be enjoyed without guilt: some flavours are 100 per cent sugar- and fat-free, while the rest are all low in these two dietary no-nos. Despite this, they don't lack the desired creamy texture.

For HK$28, you can get a half scoop each of two flavours in a cup, cone or waffle basket; HK$33 for 11/2 scoops of one to three flavours; or HK$39 for the deluxe model: three scoops with topping. The shop also sells coffee (HK$25) and non-alcoholic cocktail smoothies (HK$28), plus sundaes, ice-cream cakes and other desserts.

Gusto Gelato is at G03, Causeway Bay Plaza 2, 463 Lockhart Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 2893 6638; www.hohomei.com/gustogelato.
