Pocket-sized computer

Microsoft

The Ultra Mobile PC, or UMPC, represents a design that was originally developed by Microsoft under a program called Origami.

One of the first products in this category is the Samsung UMPC-Q1.

While the Q1 looks very much like a big portable media player, it is in fact a fully functioning computer, running Windows XP Tablet PC edition.

Equipped with 7-inch screen, a 1 GHz Intel Pentium M chip, and both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity, the Q1 can conceivably do everything that a regular PC can.

This includes accessing the Internet, and running multimedia applications like video and music playback, as well as productivity applications like Microsoft Office.

The Q1 also uses the latest storage technology and provides up to 40GB of memory in a SSD (solid state disk) drive, replacing the spinning disk of conventional hard drives with memory chips like SDRAM or flash chips.

This reportedly means no noise and faster access times when the Q1 searches its memory banks.

To make the Q1 more like other portable devices, Samsung says that it will now boot up in a matter of seconds, so users won't have to wait when wanting to hear music or check their phone book.

With prices starting at HK$14,980, the Q1 is fairly expensive for what it is - a laptop with a small screen and last year's microprocessor - but it's really easy to take with you, wherever you go.

PROS: Smaller than a laptop, but runs the same applications, wireless connectivity, touch screen, SSD drive

CONS: slow processor, expensive
