Suspected cigarette smugglers arrested

Five suspected smugglers were arrested after customs officers seized illicit cigarettes worth a total of HK$3.86 million in separate incidents. A 45-year-old truck driver was stopped at the Lok Ma Chau checkpoint at 7.50am on Saturday and 940,000 cigarettes, valued at HK$1.32 million, were found behind a partition in his truck. In the second case, a Hong Kong man, 43, and three mainlanders, aged 33 to 39, were arrested as they moved boxes of cigarettes between three trucks in San Tin, Yuen Long, at 9.10am. The haul was valued at HK$2.54 million. The suspects will appear in Fanling Court today.

Six injured when drunk goes crazy

A man was arrested after six people, including two police officers, were injured in a scuffle in Jordan at midnight. The apparently drunk man, 32, attacked two men and a woman with a bicycle-chain lock near the corner of Jordan Road and Temple Street. He also hurt a 42-year-old man when he smashed a minibus window. Two officers were hurt trying to subdue the man, who was arrested.

Man arrested after allegedly hitting mother

A police officer was punched and injured in a tussle when he tried to arrest a man who allegedly assaulted his mother in Sha Tin. The 29-year-old man, surnamed Leung, who had been drinking, allegedly hit his 60-year-old mother at their home in Kwong Yuen Estate at 4am. When a police officer arrived and tried to subdue the man, he was elbowed in the chest. The man was arrested.

Body found near highway

The body of a man was found near the Tolo Highway in Tai Po. The body was found on a slope under the Kowloon-bound side of a bridge near Kwong Fuk Estate, Tai Po, at 5.27pm. Police said that after an initial investigation there seemed to be nothing suspicious.

No tickets won the first prize in last night's draw. The numbers were 11, 22, 25, 32, 41 and 45. The extra number was 1. Four tickets each won second prize of HK$375,975. Third prize paid HK$34,870.
