Former ambassador to south Korea arrested

The former Chinese ambassador to South Korea has been detained for allegedly leaking state secrets, according to South Korean press reports. The Chinese public security authorities arrested Li Bin, 51, in December, the Chosun newspaper reported yesterday. Mr Li was vice-mayor of Weihai , Shandong, at the time of his arrest. It said he was the envoy in Seoul from September 2001 to August 2005 and was then ambassador in charge of North Korean nuclear affairs. The Foreign Ministry in Beijing could not be reached for comment yesterday.Ting Shi

Hu steps in to allow Aids ACTIVIST'S trip to the US

China's most prominent Aids activist will be allowed to travel to the US to receive a human rights award after intervention by President Hu Jintao and Vice-Premier Wu Yi, mainland Aids activists said. Gao Yaojie, 80, was told by Henan vice-party chief Chen Guangguo that she would no longer be prevented from going to the US to collect the 2007 Vital Voices Global Women's Leadership Award for Human Rights.
